The Governor General of Canada, David Johnston, will visit India from February 22 to March 2. During his nine-day visit, he will meet Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid. He will be accompanied by a delegation which will include representatives from the Government, business and academia.
The Governor General will interact with Indian and Canadian businesses and Indian innovators and is expected to visit Agra, Bengaluru and Mumbai.
India and Canada share close bilateral, cultural and trade ties. In 2011, bilateral trade crossed $5 billion. The two sides have signed a number of agreements including the Extradition Treaty, the Social Security Agreement and the Agreement on Cooperation, among others.
This will be the first visit by a Canadian Governor General since 1998.
