Debating Asia-Europe connects Asian and European citizens and policymakers in a series of online debates on the key issues facing the two continents, ranging from whether Asia’s rise is a threat or an opportunity for Europe, to the role of young people in Asia-Europe relations.

Gateway House is a knowledge partner with Debating Asia-Europe.

Debate 1: How can Europe and India strengthen their relationship?

Neelam Deo, director at Gateway House, and Joao Cravinho, EU’s ambassador to India, discuss India-EU cooperation on global governance issues such as trade, security and climate change.

Debate 2: Is it time to resume negotiations on the India-EU FTA?

Suhail Nathani, founding partner of Economic Laws Practice, and Michael Siebert, Germany’s consul general to India, discuss whether India would be better off focusing on improving trade ties with faster growing powers like China instead of European economies which are struggling to avoid stagnation.

Debate 3: How can India and Europe work for better energy security?

Dr. Pramod Deo, former Chairperson of India’s Central Electricity Regulatory Commission; Cora van Nieuwenhuizen, a Dutch MEP with the economically liberal VVD party, and Vice-Chair of the Delegation for relations with India; and  Rakesh Mehra, Executive Director (International Trade) at Bharat Petroleum, discuss EU-India cooperation on renewable energy and energy security.

Debate 4: Should rich countries pay more for climate change?

Rajni Bakshi, Gandhi Peace Fellow at Gateway House, and Neena Gill, a British Labour MEP and Vice-Chair of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with India, discuss EU-India cooperation on climate change, particularly whether the west has a higher obligation than India due to its historical legacy of greenhouse gas emissions.

Debate 5: Is outsourcing to India good for Europe?

Blaise Fernandes, Chief Executive Officer of Gateway House, and Claude Moraes, British Labour MEP and member of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with the countries of South Asia, discuss Prime Minister Modi’s “Make in India” campaign, particularly its encouragement for European companies to outsource manufacturing to India.
