Australia-India: Converging interests

On February 11, Gateway House launched its report, titled The India-Australia Security Engagement: Opportunities and Challenges. The launch was followed by a panel discussion with Patrick Suckling, Australian High Commissioner to India, in conversation with David Brewster, Senior Visiting Fellow, Maritime Studies, Gateway House, on Australia-India: Converging interests, the defence relationship and beyond.

This is the ninth meeting in the G20 Series hosted by Gateway House.

Patrick Suckling has been the High Commissioner to India since January 2013. His previous overseas assignments include Washington (2003-2007) and New Delhi (1997-1999). Between 2009-2011, he managed international issues for two Prime Ministers of Australia, encompassing foreign, economic and international aid policy. In 2007, Suckling was an adviser to the Australian Foreign Minister. Between 2011-12, Suckling was head of the Consular, Public Diplomacy and Parliamentary Affairs division of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

David Brewster is Senior Visiting Fellow, Maritime Studies, Gateway House, and Visiting Fellow, Strategic & Defence Studies Centre, Australian National University. He is a former corporate lawyer, specialising in complex cross border acquisitions and financing. His latest publications include ‘India as an Asia Pacific Power,’ ‘Operation Lal Dora: India’s aborted military intervention in Mauritius,’ ‘Asian Security, Vol.9, No.1 (2013), pp.1-12 (co-authored with Commodore Ranjit Rai),’ ‘India and Australia in Indo-Pacific Security,’ in Dennis Rumley (ed.), and ‘The Indian Ocean Region: Security, Stability and Sustainability in the 21st Century – Report of the Australia India Institute Task Force on Indian Ocean.
