Foreign Policy Roadshow: Policy Conclave with The Government Law College

Gateway House hosted a foreign policy conclave in collaboration with The Government Law College, Mumbai on 19 September 2015. The event was held at the Mumbai University Convocation Hall, and was attended by around 300 students from The Government Law College. The conclave included two panel discussions, each of which was followed by a Q & A session with the audience.

The panelists for the first session, on The New Financial World Order, were Rajrishi Singhal, Senior Fellow at Gateway House and Kevin Carmichael, Senior Fellow at Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI). Shashank Bengali, South Asia Correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, was the moderator. The discussion focused on the establishment of two key new financial institutions, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the BRICS countries’ New Development Bank (NDB). Their focus areas, mandates and voting mechanisms were analyzed, in an effort to understand if they will pose an effective challenge to the existing multilateral financial order.

The panelists for the second session, on Contemporary Trends in Global Terrorism, were Sameer Patil, Fellow, National Security, Ethnic Conflict and Terrorism at Gateway House and Kishore Mandhyan, former Political Director for Peacekeeping, Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs in the Cabinet of the Secretary General of the United Nations. The discussion was moderated by Anupam Dasgupta, journalist at The Week. This session looked at how terrorism has evolved in today’s world, with the dual approach of intensification of violence and turning to new methods for the spread of terrorist activity. In particular, the discussion focused on the use of the darknet and social media, the selection of new and uncommon targets and the responsibilities of the media in covering terrorist attacks.
