The Indo-British relationship has not been accorded much importance in India, despite Britain’s positive shift in attitude manifest in British Prime Minister David Cameron’s third Indian visit in the last three years, Britain’s vast Indian diaspora, and significant historic, cultural, and linguistic ties.
On February 19, Gateway House hosted Seema Malhotra, Member of Parliament, Labour Party, House of Commons, UK Parliament (Constituency: Feltham and Heston, Greater London), to discuss measures to enhance the bilateral trade, ways to move beyond controversial anti-immigration policies and how to use the bilateral to boost women’s entrepreneurship in India.
Seema Malhotra was elected Labour and Co-operative MP for Feltham and Heston in December 2011. In October 2013, Seema was promoted to the Opposition Whips Office after serving for a year as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Rt Hon Yvette Cooper MP, Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities, as well as being a Member of the Justice Select Committee. Seema also chairs the Parliamentary Labour Party Business Interest Group. In 2007, she was shortlisted for the Asian Women of Achievement awards.
