India’s Top Security Risks for 2014

On Republic Day, India will display its military prowess with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as the guest of honour.  But where do India’s national security risks lie? What is the significance of the visit of Japan’s defence minister and prime minister to India? Which are the trends that will affect India’s national security in 2014?

On January 22, Gateway House hosted an online discussion with Sameer Patil, Associate Fellow, National Security, Gateway House and Brigadier (retd.) Xerxes Adrianwalla, formerly with the Directorate General of Military Operations, Indian Army, on ‘India’s Top Security Risks for 2014.’

Sameer Patil is Associate Fellow, National Security, Gateway House. He previously worked as Assistant Director at the National Security Council Secretariat in Prime Minister’s Office, New Delhi. He has also worked at the Indian Pugwash Society, New Delhi, and the M. L. Sondhi Institute of Asia Pacific Affairs, New Delhi. He has written for various magazines, journals and newspapers on a wide range of national security issues, including cyber security, fake currency, terrorism, India-Pakistan relations, India-China relations, the Kashmir issue, and nuclear proliferation.

Brigadier (retd.) Xerxes Adrianwalla was with the Directorate General of Military Operations, Indian Army. Currently, he is the Chief of CIS and Group Security, Mahindra Group. He served for 30 years in the armoured corps of the Indian Army. During his military career, both in combat and in peace, he worked on various command and staff assignments: he was Brigade Major of an infantry brigade deployed in combat, commanded an armoured regiment, was a military observer on an UN assignment, instructed at various institutions including the Defence Services Staff College.
