The U.S.-India Relationship: Three Pillars of a Defining Partnership of the 21st Century

The all-important India-U.S. partnership is bringing prosperity and security to both countries.  The success of this partnership rests on three pillars: growing our bilateral ties; including private sector investment and professional and student exchanges; greater cooperation on regional and global priorities and expanded security cooperation.

On December 3, Gateway House hosted Nancy Powell, U.S. Ambassador to India, in conversation with Zia Mody, Managing Partner, AZB & Partners, and T. V. Mohandas Pai, Chairman, Manipal Universal Learning, Manipal University, to discuss ‘The U.S.-India Relationship: Three Pillars of a Defining Partnership of the 21st Century.’

Nancy Powell is the current Ambassador of the U.S. to India. Prior to this, she was the Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources, United States.  She was the U.S. Ambassador to Nepal from 2007-09.  From 2006-07, she served as the National Intelligence Officer for South Asia at the National Intelligence Council; the State Department’s Senior Coordinator for Avian Influenza; and as Acting Assistant Secretary for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Activities.  She has also served as Ambassador to Pakistan, Ghana, and Uganda.

Zia Mody is Founder and Managing Partner, AZB & Partners. She is also a non-executive director of the HSBC Asia Pacific Board. She has been Member, World Bank Administrative Tribunal, Washington D.C. (2008- 2013), and Vice President and Member, London Court of International Arbitration (2010-2013). Mody serves on various advisory committees of the Confederation of Indian Industry and is a member of the Godrej Committee on Corporate Governance that was recently constituted by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

T.V. Mohandas Pai is Chairman, Manipal Universal Learning, Manipal University. Formerly, he was as Chief Financial Officer (1994-2006), and then Head of HR and Infrastructure, Infosys. He is a trustee of the International Accounting Standards Committee Foundation, and a current member of the SEBI Accounting Standards Sub-committee.
