On January 10, Gateway House hosted Husain Haqqani, former Pakistani Ambassador to the U.S., in conversation with Vivek Katju, former Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan, to talk about the future of the U.S.-Pakistan relationship, how it has affected India and South Asia, and how it will evolve after the U.S. pulls out its troops later this year.
This is the fifth meeting in the SAARC Series hosted by Gateway House.
Husain Haqqani is the former Pakistani Ambassador to the U.S., Senior Fellow, South and Central Asia, Hudson Institute, Washington DC, Professor of the Practice of International Relations, Boston University and author of Magnificient Delusions: Pakistan, the United States, and an Epic History of Misunderstanding. He served as Pakistan’s ambassador to the U.S. from 2008-2011 and is widely credited with managing a difficult partnership during a critical phase in the global war on terrorism. He has been a journalist, academic and diplomat, in addition to serving as advisor to four Pakistani Prime Ministers, including the late Benazir Bhutto. His 2005 book Pakistan: Between Mosque and Military was acclaimed for explaining the roots of Pakistan’s foreign and domestic policies. His next book Magnificient Delusions: Pakistan, the United States, and an Epic History of Misunderstanding was released in November 2013.
Vivek Katju is the former Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan. An Indian Foreign Service officer of the 1975 batch, he served as India’s Ambassador to Afghanistan, Myanmar and Thailand. His last assignment was as Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs. Ambassador Katju was one of India’s chief negotiators during the Kandahar hijack when he headed the Pakistan-Afghanistan-Iran desk at the Ministry of External Affairs.
