India-U.S. in numbers

The U.S. and India share a long-standing relationship. These facts and figures highlights the complexities as well as the potential of the relationship

India-U.S: Economy and Trade 

U.S. economy: $17 trillion

Indian economy: $1.87 trillion

Bilateral trade: $120 billion in 2013-14

India recieves $70 bn in remittances annually, $11 bn(15.7%)  comes from Indian Americans

 

India-U.S: People-to-People Engagement 

Over 3 million people of Indian origin live in the U.S.

33% of immigrant entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley are Indian American

7% of entrepreneurs & Physicians in the U.S. are of Indian origin

Over 40% of hotels and motels in the U.S are controlled by Indian Americans

Indian students in the U.S. contributed nearly $2 billion to the U.S. economy in 2012-2013

15% of the applications for U.S. F-1 student visas are from India

 

India-U.S: Research and Development

U.S. R&D budget: $150 billion annually (2.79%)

Indian R&D budget: $650 million (0.9% GDP)

That’s 4% of US budget, with 4x the population of the US.

ISRO’s budget: $1 billion

NASA’s budget: $20 billion

India’s Mars mission budget: $75 million

NASA’s $670 million Maven satellite.
