Prime Minister Modi will visit the U.S. from 24-28 September, 2015. He will have a bilateral meeting with President Obama which will focus on expanding trade, investment and renewable energy cooperation between the two countries. |
Statement:“In meetings with CEOs of Fortune 500 companies in New York and top tech CEOs in the Silicon valley, Modi will focus on accelerating American investment into the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital India’ programmes. He will also seek to attract investment in India’s projected $1 trillion infrastructure market, into the burgeoning tech start-up scene and promote co-production in the defense sector along with the transfer of advanced technologies. The Modi-Obama bilateral will be preceded by the U.S-India Strategic and Commercial Dialogue, an energy dialogue and a meeting of the Indian and American CEOs which are underway in Washington DC. These precursor meetings have seen the U.S. reaffirming its commitment to help India achieve its goals on clean and renewable energy, while India has pushed for more bilateral co-operation regarding counter-terrorism in the region. The U.S. hopes for progress on a Bilateral Investment Treaty and for reform in India’s intellectual property rights laws, to promote investment in India and widen the access of American companies to India’s big consumer market. India seeks sensitivity to its concerns regarding reciprocal market access in the U.S. for its exports of pharmaceuticals, textile and agricultural exports goods.
In order to more fully realise the potential of this partnership, India and America must make efforts to leverage their people-to-people ties and their shared attributes – of democracy, diversity and talent for entrepreneurship and innovation.” |
