Gateway House hosted John Garnaut, the Asia Pacific editor for the Sydney Morning Herald, on July 4. He has previously served as China correspondent for the same publication from July 2007 to June 2013. Garnaut has written a book ,‘The Rise and Fall of the House of Bo’, and is currently in Melbourne where he is working on a sequel about the rise of China’s princeling rulers.
He discusses whether President Xi Jinping will make the tough decisions required to reform the economy, what the Bo Xilai saga revealed about the Communist party and argues why China’s frailing relations with its neighbours present a strategic opportunity for India.
