In West Asia, nations such as Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries are starting to understand their pivotal geopolitical positioning in world affairs – and are making calibrated and strategic moves to preserve or recover global stability. It’s welcome at a time when more than two dozen conflicts are ongoing, when geopolitical rivals have hardened their positions, and diplomacy has failed to de-escalate in the primary contests.
In 2023, India will be the President of the G20, often called the world's economic steering committee. This most influential multilateral economic forum is a unique institution, where developed and developing countries have equal stature. It thereby creates opportunities for all to showcase their global political, economic and intellectual leadership, making the global economic governance agenda more inclusive. This book, a collection of analysis and studies by Gateway House since 2015, explains the G20's importance, its various parts and the contributions made by the 20 countries that comprise it. India's Presidency year provides it the opportunity to 'hold the pen, write the rules’ and lead the G20 year intellectually, financially, managerially and administratively. An excerpt.

The Oct 30-31 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rome took several important steps to accelerate economic recovery and health security. In the absence of several Eurasian leaders, India played a significant role especially on climate and energy. The G20 will now acquire greater salience in India's foreign policy, as it readies to lead the grouping in 2023.

The UN turned 75 this year but instead of grand celebrations, the world witnessed an empty UNGA with world leaders addressing it via video screening because of the pandemic. The UN is under unprecedented stress and being shown up for its inability to tackle the challenges of today like the pandemics, climate change, terrorism or global peace and security. The institution's key governing structures, especially the UN Security Council, are inadequate and demand reform. India must now use gritty resolve to ensure its place in these governing structures.

The COVID crisis compelled a change in the Business20 (B20) focus areas to reviving health, health facilities and business activity in 2020. India must start work now to give the B20 even greater responsiveness and relevance as the prospective G20 chair in 2022.
